Dr. Gerard Francisco Sandoval, PhD, is a professor of planning, public policy, and management within UO’s College of Design, where he has been teaching and conducting research since 2010. His scholarly research focuses on the intersection of city planning, immigration, and sustainable neighborhood revitalization, emphasizing equitable planning outcomes. Recognized internationally for his scholarship, Dr. Sandoval has received awards for Best Dissertation, Best Article, and Best Book from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. He also serves on the editorial boards of leading academic research journals: the American Planning Association, the Journal of Planning Education and Research, and the Journal of Planning Literature.

Dr. Sandoval previously served on two other state of Oregon governing boards: the Housing Stability Council and the Land Conservation and Development Commission. Dr. Sandoval earned his PhD and master’s degrees in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and his BS in community and regional development from the University of California, Davis. Earlier in his career, he served as an intelligence officer in the Army National Guard for six years, where he developed leadership skills that continue to influence his professional life.

Beyond his academic and public service roles, Dr. Sandoval is an avid big game hunter who enjoys exploring Oregon’s natural landscapes. He is married to an elementary school teacher and is the proud father of three children, the youngest of whom was born in Oregon.
