Dr. Gerard Francisco Sandoval, PhD, is a professor at UO’s School of Planning, Public Policy, and Management, where he has been teaching and conducting research since 2010. His scholarly work focuses on the intersection of city planning, immigration, and environmentally sustainable neighborhood revitalization. Recognized internationally for his contributions, Dr. Sandoval has received awards for Best Dissertation, Best Article, and Best Book from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. He also serves on the editorial boards of leading academic journals: the American Planning Association, the Journal of Planning Education and Research, and the Journal of Planning Literature.

Professor Sandoval previously served on two other Oregon state governing boards: the Housing Stability Council and the Land Conservation and Development Commission. He earned his PhD and master’s degrees in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and his BS in community and regional development from the University of California, Davis. Earlier in his career, he spent six years as an intelligence officer in the Army National Guard, where he developed leadership skills that continue to influence his professional life.

Outside of his academic and public service roles, Professor Sandoval is an active outdoorsman who views hunting as a form of ecological stewardship, emphasizing the ethical management of predator species. His wife, Franchesca, is an elementary school teacher, and they are the proud parents of three children, the youngest of whom was born in Oregon.
